Machine Shop has been recently named as one of the best bakeries in United States by NYT. I think it deserves the honor. I did not try most of the bakeries listed by NYT but.. I think Machine Shop could be the best in the nation. It is that good.
Machine Shop is located in a quaint building called BoK. I heard that that building was formerly used as some vocational education. The building now is being used some general market place for small businesses. You can find Bike shop, pottery shop and some events along with Gymnastic training. There are a few food providing businesses. Two Persons coffee and Miles Table are two other, along with Machine Shop.
Machine Shop provides limited seletion of pastries and breads. All of them are superb. Whether cookie or croissant, it is perfectly cooked. Crispy outside and soft inside. Their flavor is excellent. Their sweet pastries along with savory danish is perfect for breakfast. Try their jammy egg + hot pepper stew + feta and milk chocolate praline cake. They’ll blow your mind.
They make some excellent breads. They have not failed on me yet. My go to item is their seeded rye pullman. Other items like baguette and batards are best you can get in Philadelphia.
Not all their items are available all the time. So, go there early and get whatever you can get.
Finally, their candies are so good. If you have extra money and appetite, try it.
